C0267Generic code

C0267 Code: ABS Pump Motor Circuit Open or Shorted

The C0267 code means the ABS module detected an open circuit or a short in the ABS pump motor, the pump that restores brake pressure during an ABS stop. The ABS and the stability control are left disabled.

What the C0267 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The ABS pump only runs when the ABS acts, and during the self-test at startup, when you hear a brief buzz. The module monitors the voltage and current of the motor, and if it does not respond as expected, it stores the C0267 code.

It is usually caused by the pump fuse or relay, a corroded ground on the hydraulic unit, or the pump motor itself. On many vehicles the relay is built into the module.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

C0267 code symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lights on.
  • The self-test buzz is not heard at startup.
  • The ABS does not act in a hard stop.

Likely causes of the C0267 code

  1. Blown pump motor fuse. It is usually a high amperage fuse.
  2. Corroded hydraulic unit ground. Confirm it with the tests in the diagnosis section.
  3. Failed pump motor. Worn brushes or a seized motor.
  4. Internal relay of the module. Swap it with an identical one to rule it out.
  5. Hydraulic unit connector with water or corrosion.

How to diagnose the C0267 code step by step

  1. Check the pump fuse in the fuse box in the engine compartment.
  2. Measure the hydraulic unit ground. The voltage drop should be under 0.2 V.
  3. Command the pump with the scan tool and listen for it to run.
  4. Inspect the unit connector.

How to fix the C0267 code

  • Replace the fuse and find the cause if it blows again.
  • Repair the ground or the connector.
  • Replace the pump motor or the hydraulic unit.
  • Bleed the brakes with the scan tool if the hydraulic circuit was opened.

Technical reference data

  • Typical pump motor current draw: 20 to 40 A.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

Do not condemn the pump before you have checked the fuse and the ground. They are the cheapest causes and the quickest to test.

C0267 on Chevrolet and GMC

This code is common on Chevrolet and GMC vehicles, and on high mileage vehicles from other makes.

Frequently asked questions about C0267

What does the C0267 code mean?
It means the ABS module found an open circuit or a short in the ABS pump motor circuit.
Can I drive with a C0267 code?
Yes, the C0267 code does not stop the car from running, but drive with caution. The normal brakes work, but the ABS and stability control are off. Leave extra stopping distance on wet roads.
Do the normal brakes still work?
Yes. Only the ABS function fails.
Do the brakes have to be bled?
If the hydraulic system is opened, yes, and often with the scan tool.
How much does it cost to fix C0267?
Roughly between $10 and $1,500. A fuse is at the low end and a hydraulic unit is at the high end.
Will a C0267 code clear itself?
No, not if the fuse is blown or the pump is bad. The module tests the pump at every startup and will set the code again.
