C0242 Code: Engine Computer Indicates a Fault That Disables Traction Control
The C0242 code means the engine computer warned the ABS module about a fault of its own, so the traction control is disabled. The real problem is in the engine, not in the ABS.

What the C0242 code means
The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.
Traction control needs to reduce engine torque in order to work. If the engine computer has a fault (for example, with the electronic throttle or misfires), it informs the ABS, and the ABS disables the traction control and stores the C0242 code.
Read the engine computer codes: resolving them makes the C0242 code go away.
Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).
This is a "consequence" code, so do not look for the fault in the ABS. Fix the engine P codes first (for example, the electronic throttle, misfires or position sensors) and then clear the ABS codes.
C0242 code symptoms
- Traction control and check engine warning lights on.
Likely causes of the C0242 code
- Engine computer codes. This is the real cause.
- Communication between the engine and the ABS. A fault in the CAN network between the two modules.
How to diagnose the C0242 code step by step
- Read and repair the engine codes.
- Clear the ABS codes after the repair.
How to fix the C0242 code
- Repair the engine fault.
- Clear the codes in both modules.
Technical reference data
- Traction control depends on the engine computer.
- These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
Always scan every module, not only the ABS. The engine code that triggered this one is the one that tells you what to repair.
C0242 on GM and Chevrolet
This code is very common on GM and Chevrolet vehicles, together with P codes.
