C0161Manufacturer-specific code

C0161 Code: ABS/TCS Brake Switch Circuit Failure

The C0161 code means the ABS module is not receiving the signal from the brake pedal switch correctly. It is usually the switch itself, its adjustment or the brake light fuse.

What the C0161 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The ABS module needs to know when the brake is pressed. If the signal fails or does not agree with other information (for example, the vehicle is braking but the switch does not say so), it stores the C0161 code. It is usually the switch itself, its adjustment, or the brake light fuse.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

On many vehicles the brake switch has two circuits: one for the lights and one for the module. That is why the brake lights can work fine and the code can still appear. Compare the switch state on the scan tool as you press and release the pedal.

C0161 code symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lights on.
  • Brake lights that do not come on or do not go off.

Likely causes of the C0161 code

  1. Brake switch out of adjustment. It does not change state when the pedal is pressed, or it does so late.
  2. Blown brake light fuse. The module stops receiving the brake signal.
  3. Rubber pedal stop that crumbles, so the switch stays always pressed or always released.
  4. Wiring that is damaged, pinched or has corroded connectors.

How to diagnose the C0161 code step by step

  1. Check the brake lights.
  2. Look at the brake signal on the scan tool.
  3. Press and release the pedal while watching the scan tool. The state should change instantly.

How to fix the C0161 code

  • Adjust or replace the switch.
  • Replace the fuse.

Technical reference data

  • 12 V signal when the brake is pressed.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

Check the small rubber stop on the brake pedal arm early in the diagnosis. When it breaks up, the switch loses its correct position and sets this code.

C0161 on GM and Chevrolet

This code is common on GM and Chevrolet vehicles.

Frequently asked questions about C0161

What does the C0161 code mean?
It means the ABS module is not getting the brake pedal switch signal correctly, or the signal does not agree with what the vehicle is doing.
Can I drive with a C0161 code?
Yes, the C0161 code does not stop the car from running, so you can drive as long as you check that the brake lights work. Without working brake lights, other drivers cannot see when you stop.
Is it expensive to fix?
No. It is usually a cheap switch, an adjustment or a fuse.
What usually fails?
The brake switch.
How much does it cost to fix C0161?
Between $5 and $150. A fuse is at the low end and a new switch with labor is at the high end.
Will a C0161 code clear itself?
Only if the switch or fuse problem was temporary. A switch that is worn or out of adjustment will bring the code back.
