P2600 Code: Coolant Pump Control Circuit/Open

The P2600 code means the coolant pump control circuit is open, so the component gets no current when it is commanded. It can cause the engine or the turbo to overheat. Drive with great care and watch the temperature.

What the P2600 code means

Many modern engines use electric coolant pumps, or mechanical pumps with a controlled clutch. The computer decides when to circulate coolant so the engine warms up sooner and so the turbo is cooled after you shut the engine off.

The computer watches the control circuit from its own driver transistor. The P2600 code reports an open circuit: the component gets no current when it is commanded. Before you replace the component, check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring, which are the most common cause.

Some pumps talk to the computer with a PWM signal or over the LIN bus.

Measure the resistance of the component at its connector. If it is infinite, it is open inside. If it is correct, follow the control wire to the computer looking for a break, especially in the stretches near the exhaust or in intermediate connectors.

P2600 code symptoms

  • Check engine light or another warning light on.
  • Overheating of the engine or the turbo.

Likely causes of the P2600 code

  1. Connector unplugged or with a broken lock.
  2. Open coil, with infinite resistance.
  3. Wire cut. Check the areas where it rubs.
  4. Blown fuse, often from an earlier short circuit.

How to diagnose the P2600 code step by step

  1. Command the component with the scan tool and check whether it responds.
  2. Check the fuse and relay. Measure voltage on both sides of the fuse and swap the relay with an identical one.
  3. Measure the supply at the connector: battery voltage with the key on or when it is commanded.
  4. Measure the component resistance and compare it with the manual, and check the insulation to ground too.
  5. Check the control wire: continuity to the computer and no short circuits.

How to fix the P2600 code

  • Repair the connector, the wiring or the supply.
  • Replace the coolant pump if it does not respond with correct supply and command.
  • Clear the codes and verify.

Technical reference data

  • 12 V supply and PWM or LIN control.
  • Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

A fuse that blew once usually blew for a reason. Find the short before you put in a new one, or the P2600 code will return.

P2600 on BMW

Common on BMW, where the main coolant pump is electric.

P2600 on Volkswagen and Audi

Common on these makes, where an auxiliary pump is used.

P2600 on Ford EcoBoost and Mercedes-Benz

Also common on Ford EcoBoost engines and on Mercedes-Benz.

Frequently asked questions about P2600

Can I drive with a P2600 code?
With great care, watching the temperature. If it climbs, stop, because the engine or the turbo can overheat.
What does the coolant pump do?
Many modern engines use electric coolant pumps, or mechanical pumps with a controlled clutch. The computer decides when to circulate coolant so the engine warms up sooner and so the turbo is cooled after you shut the engine off.
Does the part always have to be replaced?
No. Check the fuses, relays, connectors and wiring first.
What does the P2600 code mean?
It means the control circuit of the coolant pump is open, so the pump does not get the current the computer commands.
How much does it cost to fix P2600?
Roughly $150 to $900. A fuse, connector or wire repair is at the low end, and a new coolant pump costs the most.
