P2119 Code: Throttle Actuator Control Throttle Body Range/Performance
The P2119 code means the throttle plate is not behaving the way the computer expects: it does not return to its rest position, it moves with difficulty or it does not hold the commanded opening. It is a mechanical code before it is an electrical one, and carbon around the shaft explains most cases.

What the P2119 code means
An electronic throttle body has three elements that have to work together: a motor that opens the plate, a spring that returns it to a rest position when power is lost, and two sensors that report where it ended up.
The computer does not simply check that the plate reaches the commanded opening. It also watches the behavior of the whole assembly: whether it returns to rest when the command is removed, whether it moves as smoothly as expected and whether it holds its position without drifting.
The P2119 code is stored when that overall behavior does not fit. It does not point to an open circuit or to contradictory signals. It says the mechanical assembly is not responding the way it should.
That narrows the diagnosis to two fronts. The first is friction: carbon built up around the shaft and the edge of the plate drags on it, makes the motor strain and keeps it from returning to rest cleanly. The second is wear: gears with play, a weakened return spring or motor brushes at their limit.
A practical detail about cleaning: on many engines the edge of the plate and its bore carry a special coating that must not be scrubbed with abrasives. Cleaning with a scouring pad or a wire brush removes that coating and leaves the surface rough, which worsens the fit and speeds up the next buildup. Use the right product, a soft rag and patience.
P2119 code symptoms
- Limp mode with very limited power.
- Check engine light on and the electronic throttle warning symbol.
- A high idle that does not come down, or an engine that stalls when you stop.
- The engine does not respond to the pedal, or responds late.
- Gear noise or a buzzing sound at the throttle body.
- Hard starting that needs you to press the gas pedal.
- The symptom goes away for a while after you shut the engine off and restart it.
- The code comes back soon after a cleaning done with abrasives.
Likely causes of the P2119 code
- Carbon built up around the shaft and the edge of the plate. This is the dominant cause.
- Weak or broken return spring, which does not bring the plate back to rest.
- Internal gears with play or damaged teeth.
- Actuator motor with worn brushes.
- Adaptations not reset after cleaning or replacing the assembly.
- Too many crankcase oil vapors, which speed up deposits.
- Plate forced by hand during a cleaning, which leaves the mechanism out of calibration.
- Connector with backed-out pins or moisture.
- Weak battery, which keeps the motor from developing force.
- Plate coating removed by abrasive cleaning, which worsens the fit and speeds up deposits.
How to diagnose the P2119 code step by step
- Turn the key on without starting the engine and listen to the self-test sweep. It should sound clean and smooth. A strained or uneven sweep points to friction or wear.
- Remove the throttle body and inspect it. The carbon around the shaft is usually visible to the naked eye.
- Check that the plate returns to rest on its own when you open it with the assembly removed and unpowered.
- Compare the commanded opening with the real one in live data over the whole travel.
- Check for play in the gears by moving the plate gently.
- Measure the actuator motor resistance and compare it with the specification.
- Check the battery condition and the connector.
- Inspect the crankcase ventilation system, which is where the deposits come from.
- Ask how the throttle body was cleaned the last time. Abrasives remove the coating and make the code return sooner.
How to fix the P2119 code
- Clean the throttle body with a product made for it and a soft rag. Do not move the plate by hand and do not force the mechanism.
- Reset the adaptations with the scan tool after cleaning. Without that step the idle is off and the code usually comes back.
- Replace the whole assembly if the return spring is weak or the gears have play, because those parts are not sold separately.
- Replace the oil separator in the crankcase ventilation system if it is sending too many vapors.
- Clean the connector and protect it with dielectric grease.
- Replace the battery if its voltage is not enough.
After the work, run the throttle relearn and confirm that the real opening follows the commanded opening across the whole range.
- Always clean with a product made for it and a soft rag, never with a scouring pad or a wire brush.
Technical reference data
- Throttle opening at hot idle: usually between 2 and 8 percent.
- Typical actuator motor resistance: 1 to 5 ohms.
- When you turn the key on, the actuator runs an audible self-test sweep of one to two seconds.
- The plate must return to its rest position on its own when power is removed.
- After cleaning or replacing the part, the adaptations must be reset.
- The edge of the plate carries a coating that abrasives remove, which worsens the fit.
Brand-specific notes
The difference between this code and P2101 is subtle but useful. P2101 says the plate does not reach the commanded position, and P2119 says its overall behavior is not what was expected. In practice both are usually solved the same way, with a cleaning and an adaptation reset, but P2119 points harder at mechanical wear in the assembly.
Do not force the plate with your hand while you clean it. The internal mechanism and the spring are delicate, and forcing them turns an inexpensive cleaning into the replacement of the whole assembly.
