P0616Generic code

P0616 Code: Starter Relay Circuit Low

The P0616 code means the computer sees low voltage in the starter relay control circuit, from a short to ground or a missing power supply. It can leave you with an engine that does not start. Check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring before replacing anything.

What the P0616 code means

On many vehicles the computer turns on the starter through a relay, after checking that the brake is pressed, the shifter is in P or N and the key is valid.

The computer watches the control circuit from its own driver transistor. The P0616 code means low voltage in the control circuit (a short to ground or a missing power supply). Before you replace the component, check the fuse, relay, connector and wiring, which are the most usual cause.

A relay that does not close leaves the vehicle unable to start. One that sticks keeps the starter turning after the engine starts, which can damage the pinion and the ring gear. Swapping the relay with an identical one from the fuse box is the quickest test.

To confirm it, unplug the component with the key on and watch what happens to the reading or the code. If the value jumps to the opposite extreme, the wiring is fine and the component is the one pulling the signal to ground. If it does not change, look for the short in the wire, starting where the harness rubs against the engine, the chassis or the exhaust.

P0616 code symptoms

  • Check engine light or another warning light on.
  • The engine does not start.
  • The engine does not crank and you do not hear the starter.
  • The starter keeps turning after the engine starts (stuck relay).

Likely causes of the P0616 code

  1. Control wire shorted to ground. The component may stay on all the time, or the computer cuts the command to protect itself.
  2. Interrupted power supply: blown fuse, bad relay or a cut wire.
  3. Component with an internal short. Its resistance is far below specification.
  4. Connector with moisture. It creates a path to ground.

How to diagnose the P0616 code step by step

  1. Activate the component with the scan tool and check whether it responds.
  2. Check the fuse and relay. Measure voltage on both sides of the fuse and swap the relay with an identical one.
  3. Measure the supply at the connector. You should see battery voltage with the key on or when you command it.
  4. Measure the component resistance and compare it with the manual, and also check the insulation to ground.
  5. Check the control wire for continuity to the computer and for the absence of shorts.

How to fix the P0616 code

  • Repair the connector, the wiring or the power supply.
  • Replace the starter relay if it does not respond with correct power and command.
  • Clear the codes and verify.

Technical reference data

  • 12 V relay, with a coil of 50 to 100 ohms.
  • Reference values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions about P0616

Can I drive with the P0616 code?
If the starter keeps turning after the engine starts, do not use the vehicle until it is repaired. If it only fails sometimes, it can leave you unable to start.
What does the starter relay do?
On many vehicles the computer turns on the starter through a relay, after checking that the brake is pressed, the shifter is in P or N and the key is valid.
Does the part always have to be replaced?
No. Check the fuses, relays, connectors and wiring first.
How much does it cost to fix P0616?
As a guide, between $20 and $300.
What does the P0616 code mean?
The P0616 code is a generic OBD2 code for low voltage in the starter relay control circuit. It points to a short to ground or a missing power supply.
What is the most common cause of P0616?
A control wire shorted to ground, or an interrupted power supply from a blown fuse, bad relay or cut wire.
