P0528 Code: Fan Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
The P0528 code means the computer sees no signal at all from the fan speed sensor. The main effect is imprecise fan control. The sensor may have no power, the signal wire may be cut, or the sensor itself may be dead.

What the P0528 code means
On vehicles with an electronic fan clutch or variable-speed fans, a sensor measures the real fan speed so the computer can control it.
The sensor produces pulses whose frequency depends on the speed or quantity being measured. With no pulses at all, which is what the P0528 code reports, the computer cannot work out the quantity and falls back on a substitute value.
Without this signal, the computer cannot regulate the fan precisely, and for safety it usually leaves the fan engaged or at full speed. That means more noise and fuel use, but the engine stays protected.
First check that the sensor is getting power and ground. Then, with the component moving, measure the signal with an oscilloscope or with a multimeter on the frequency range. If there are no pulses with the correct supply, the sensor is damaged. If the pulses are present at the sensor but not at the computer, the wire is cut.
P0528 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Imprecise fan control.
Likely causes of the P0528 code
- Sensor without power. A fuse or the reference.
- Signal wire cut between the sensor and the computer.
- Failed sensor. It does not generate pulses.
- Damaged reading wheel or element. Broken or dirty teeth.
How to diagnose the P0528 code step by step
- Read the sensor value on the scan tool and compare it with what you expect.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, water or loose pins.
- Check the supply and ground with the key on: the reference should be correct, with less than 0.1 V of voltage drop on the ground.
- Measure the signal with the connector plugged in and watch whether it changes with the condition.
- Do a wiggle test on the harness with the scan tool in graph mode.
- Check the continuity of each wire to the computer (under 1 ohm).
How to fix the P0528 code
- Repair the connector or the wiring.
- Replace the sensor if the tests confirm it is bad.
- Correct the real condition if there is one.
- Clear the codes and verify with a road test.
Technical reference data
- Three-wire Hall effect sensor in most cases.
- These values are a general guide: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
