P0524 Code: Engine Oil Pressure Too Low
The P0524 code means the measured engine oil pressure is too low. Shut the engine off and check the oil level right away, because driving without pressure can destroy the engine in minutes. Low oil level is the most common cause, but a worn pump or bearings are possible.

What the P0524 code means
The computer monitors oil pressure and, if it falls below the minimum for the current engine speed, it stores the P0524 code and turns on the warning light. Unlike the circuit codes, this one points to low pressure, and that pressure can be real.
The most frequent cause is a low oil level. Others are oil of the wrong viscosity or oil that is badly degraded, a clogged filter, a worn oil pump or bearings with too much clearance. The sensor can also fail, but never assume that without measuring the real pressure.
The sensor profile pages explain how to test the oil pressure sensor.
After a real pressure failure, listen to the engine carefully: a metallic knock that gets louder with engine speed points to damaged rod bearings. In that case an oil change is not enough, because the engine needs a repair. If the real pressure is correct and the engine is quiet, the sensor or its wiring is the culprit.
P0524 code symptoms
- Oil light on or flashing.
- Engine knocking noise (lifters, rod bearings).
- Low reading on the pressure gauge.
Likely causes of the P0524 code
- Low oil level. The most frequent cause.
- Oil of the wrong viscosity or degraded oil. Oil that is too thin or badly worn loses pressure when hot.
- Clogged oil filter or one of poor quality.
- Worn oil pump. It delivers less pressure when hot.
- Worn bearings. The extra clearance lets the pressure leak away.
- Faulty sensor. Only after you have measured the real pressure.
How to diagnose the P0524 code step by step
- Stop the engine and check the oil level.
- Measure the real pressure with a mechanical gauge.
- Check the oil and the filter.
- If the real pressure is low, look for the mechanical cause.
- Listen to the engine. A knock that rises with engine speed points to bearing damage.
How to fix the P0524 code
- Top up or change the oil and the filter.
- Repair the pump or the bearings if the real pressure is low.
- Replace the sensor if the real pressure is correct.
Technical reference data
- Pressure when hot: 1 to 2 bar (about 15 to 29 psi) at idle and 3 to 5 bar (about 44 to 73 psi) at 3,000 rpm.
- These values are a general guide: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
On engines with a variable oil pump, the pump solenoid can also cause low pressure, so it belongs on the list of suspects.
P0524 on Volkswagen
On Volkswagen engines with a variable oil pump, the pump solenoid can also cause low pressure.
P0524 on Ford EcoBoost
On Ford EcoBoost engines with a variable oil pump, the pump solenoid can also cause low pressure.
P0524 on GM
On GM engines with a variable oil pump, the pump solenoid can also cause low pressure.
