P0381 Code: Glow Plug/Heater Indicator Circuit
The P0381 code means there is a fault in the circuit of the glow plug indicator light on the dash. The system may still work, but the driver cannot tell when the glow plugs have finished heating. It is a low severity code, though worn glow plugs behind it will cause hard cold starts and white smoke.

What the P0381 code means
Diesel engines use glow plugs to make cold starting easier. They heat the combustion chamber before and during the first seconds or minutes of operation. A relay or a glow plug control module runs them.
The P0381 code refers to the dash indicator light, the orange coil symbol. If it does not work, the driver does not know when the glow plugs have finished heating. On many modern vehicles the light is controlled by the instrument cluster over the communication network.
With defective glow plugs the engine starts poorly when cold, puffs white smoke and runs unevenly until it warms up. In hot weather the fault can go unnoticed.
On modern diesels the heating continues for a few minutes after the engine starts (post-heating) to cut smoke and noise. That is why the glow plugs work much harder than they did on older diesels and burn out more often. Many modern modules watch the current of each glow plug, and the computer can point to the specific cylinder. Older ones only detect a general circuit fault.
A relay that sticks closed keeps the glow plugs powered all the time. They burn out in a short while and the battery runs down. If you replace burned-out glow plugs, always check the relay or the module so it does not happen again.
P0381 code symptoms
- Hard starting when cold.
- White smoke at startup.
- Rough idle when cold.
- Glow plug light flashing, or the check engine light on.
- Battery that runs down if the relay sticks closed.
Likely causes of the P0381 code
- Indicator circuit open or shorted, or a defective instrument cluster.
- Burned-out glow plug. The most frequent cause, as its resistance becomes infinite.
- Corroded wiring or bus bar. The glow plug nuts rust and lose contact.
- Blown high-current fuse, often after a glow plug short.
How to diagnose the P0381 code step by step
- Measure the resistance of each glow plug. Approximate: 0.5 to 2 ohms. Infinite means burned out.
- Check the voltage at the glow plugs during pre-heating: it should be battery voltage.
- Measure the current with a clamp ammeter. Each glow plug draws about 8 to 15 A at the start.
- Check the relay or module: power supply, command and output.
- Check the indicator light and its circuit if the P0381 code is about the indicator.
How to fix the P0381 code
- Replace the burned-out glow plugs (the whole set is recommended if they have high mileage).
- Replace the relay or the control module.
- Repair the wiring and the fuse.
- Apply anti-seize to the threads and use the correct torque. Glow plugs break easily.
Technical reference data
- Glow plug resistance: 0.5 to 2 ohms.
- Initial current per glow plug: 8 to 15 A.
- Typical tightening torque: 8 to 20 N·m (about 6 to 15 lb-ft).
- These are approximate values. Check the manufacturer data for your engine.
Brand-specific notes
P0381 on Volkswagen
On the Volkswagen TDI the glow plug module tells the computer which glow plug is failing. Some scan tools show the specific cylinder.
P0381 on Ford
On the Ford Duratorq the glow plug module tells the computer which glow plug is failing. Some scan tools show the specific cylinder.
P0381 on Nissan
On the Nissan dCi the glow plug module tells the computer which glow plug is failing. Some scan tools show the specific cylinder.
