P2251 Code: O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit/Open (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
The P2251 code means there is an open circuit in the negative current line of the wideband oxygen sensor on bank 1. Without that line, the computer cannot measure the mixture and falls back on fixed values. You can drive with caution, but fuel use goes up and the engine may run worse.

What the P2251 code means
Wideband sensors, also called A/F sensors, measure the mixture accurately across the whole range, not just whether it is rich or lean. They have a pumping cell and a reference cell, and the computer controls the pumping current to measure the oxygen.
The sensor gets a 5 V reference and a ground from the computer and returns a signal of roughly 0.5 to 4.5 V. A high signal is usually caused by an open circuit or an interrupted ground.
These sensors have five or six wires and are not tested like a classic oxygen sensor. The scan tool shows a lambda ratio or a current in milliamps. A sensor guide shows how to test one.
To confirm it, measure the continuity of each wire between the component connector and the computer connector with the key off. It should be less than 1 ohm, and an infinite reading means the wire is open. If the wiring is good, measure the component itself: infinite resistance confirms it is open inside.
The P2251 code points at the negative current control line specifically, so concentrate the wiring tests on that circuit between the sensor and the computer.
P2251 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- The mixture stays at fixed values, fuel use goes up and the engine may run worse.
Likely causes of the P2251 code
- Loose or broken connector. The most common cause.
- Cut signal or ground wire. The signal rises all the way to the reference voltage.
- Sensor open inside with infinite resistance.
- Short to 5 V or 12 V from rubbing against another wire in the harness.
How to diagnose the P2251 code step by step
- Read the sensor value on the scan tool and compare it with what you expect.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, water or loose pins.
- Check power and ground with the key on: correct reference voltage and less than 0.1 V drop on the ground.
- Measure the signal with the connector plugged in and see whether it changes with the conditions.
- Do a wiggle test on the wiring with the scan tool in graph mode.
- Check the continuity of each wire to the computer (less than 1 ohm).
How to fix the P2251 code
- Repair the connector or the wiring.
- Replace the sensor if the tests confirm it is bad.
- Correct the real condition if there is one.
- Clear the codes and verify with a road test.
After the repair, confirm on the scan tool that the lambda reading moves with the mixture again. If the P2251 code stays away, the repair is complete.
Technical reference data
- Lambda 1.00: ideal mixture. Greater than 1: lean. Less than 1: rich.
- Pumping current: close to 0 mA at lambda 1, positive when lean and negative when rich.
- Heater: typical resistance of 2 to 5 ohms cold.
- These are reference values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
