P0909 Code: Gate Select Control Error
The P0909 code means the gear select movement did not reach the position that the automated transmission computer asked for. The transmission can be left without gears. Run the relearn procedures, check the battery and then inspect the actuator and the mechanism.

What the P0909 code means
Automated manual transmissions (Opel Easytronic, Fiat Dualogic, Toyota MMT, BMW SMG, Ford Durashift, Volkswagen ASG) and many dual clutch transmissions use electric or hydraulic actuators to disengage the clutch, to choose the gear plane (select) and to engage the gear (shift). The transmission computer watches every actuator with position sensors.
The P0909 code means the computer asked for a select movement and the position sensor did not confirm that it finished in the expected time. The cause can be the actuator, the transmission mechanism (stiff, loose or worn), the sensor, or relearn procedures that were never done.
After any repair of these components you must run the transmission relearn procedures with a scan tool (clutch touch point, select and shift positions). Without them the transmission will not work properly.
P0909 code symptoms
- The transmission does not go into gear or stays in neutral.
- Slow shifts.
- Warning message in the instrument cluster.
Likely causes of the P0909 code
- Worn actuator. It does not have enough force.
- Stiff or damaged transmission mechanism. Forks and synchronizers.
- Misadjusted position sensor.
- Relearn procedures not done after a repair or after disconnecting the battery.
- Low battery voltage. Electric actuators need it.
How to diagnose the P0909 code step by step
- Run the transmission relearn procedures.
- Command the actuator with the scan tool and measure how long it takes.
- Measure battery voltage.
- Inspect the transmission mechanism.
How to fix the P0909 code
- Run the relearn procedures.
- Replace the actuator if it is worn.
- Repair the transmission mechanism if it is damaged.
Technical reference data
- Minimum battery voltage during shifts: about 11 volts.
- Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
This code is very common on automated manual transmissions. On many hydraulic systems the actuator fluid is a specific type and the reservoir should be checked regularly.
P0909 on Opel
Very common on the Opel Easytronic.
P0909 on Fiat
Very common on the Fiat Dualogic.
P0909 on Toyota
Very common on the Toyota MMT.
P0909 on Smart
Seen on Smart vehicles with an automated manual transmission.
P0909 on BMW
Very common on the BMW SMG.
