P0827 Code: Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit Low
The P0827 code means the signal from the upshift and downshift switch is below its minimum value. The main effect is that the manual mode is disabled. A signal wire shorted to ground or a missing reference is the usual cause.

What the P0827 code means
In the manual modes of an automatic transmission, a set of switches or a resistor ladder line tells the computer whether the driver is asking for an upshift or a downshift.
It is a switch: the computer sees a high or low voltage depending on its position. A low signal, which sets the P0827 code, is usually caused by the signal wire shorted to ground or by a missing reference.
If the signal fails, the manual mode is disabled and the transmission stays in automatic. Steering wheel paddles depend on the clockspring, which may be damaged.
To confirm it, unplug the component with the key on and watch what happens to the reading or the code. If the value jumps to the opposite extreme, the wiring is good and the component is the one pulling the signal to ground. If nothing changes, look for the short in the wire, starting where the harness rubs against the engine, the chassis or the exhaust.
P0827 code symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Manual mode disabled.
Likely causes of the P0827 code
- Signal wire shorted to ground because the harness rubs against the engine, the chassis or a bracket.
- Power reference shorted. If several sensors fail at once, suspect the shared reference.
- Damaged switch with an internal short.
- Connector with water or corrosion, which creates a path to ground.
How to diagnose the P0827 code step by step
- Read the switch value on the scan tool and compare it with what is expected.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, water or loose pins.
- Check power and ground with the key on: a correct reference and less than 0.1 V of drop on the ground.
- Measure the signal with the connector plugged in and see whether it changes with the condition.
- Do the wiggle test on the harness with the scan tool in graphing mode.
- Check the continuity of each wire up to the computer (under 1 ohm).
- Check the clockspring if the paddles are on the steering wheel.
How to fix the P0827 code
- Repair the connector or the wiring.
- Replace the switch if the tests confirm it.
- Correct the real condition, if there is one.
- Clear the codes and verify with a road test.
Technical reference data
- The switch or sensor is powered from the computer: check the manual for the values.
- These are approximate values: check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.
Brand-specific notes
The letter assignment and the location of the component change from one manufacturer to another, so check the manual for your vehicle.
