P0497 Code: Evaporative Emission System Low Purge Flow
The P0497 code means the expected vapor flow is not reaching the engine when the purge opens. It is usually caused by a purge valve that will not open or a clogged hose. It does not affect driving, but you will not pass an emissions test.

What the P0497 code means
When the computer opens the purge, it should see vacuum in the tank and a change in the fuel mixture. If that does not happen, it stores the P0497 code.
It does not affect driving, but the canister does not get emptied and can become saturated. Over time a gasoline smell and trouble at fill-ups can show up.
Check the hoses too. A kinked or clogged hose has the same effect as a valve that stays closed.
Unlike P0496, here the computer opens the purge and does not detect flow. First check that the valve is getting the command (you should hear a click when you activate it with the scan tool) and that it really opens (there should be suction at the canister hose when you activate it with the engine running). If it opens and there is still no flow, the problem is downstream: a kinked or clogged hose, or a canister full of liquid gasoline.
P0497 code symptoms
- Normally no symptoms.
- Gasoline smell.
- Check engine light on.
Likely causes of the P0497 code
- Purge valve that will not open, with an open coil or a stuck valve.
- Clogged or kinked hose that blocks the flow of vapors.
- Clogged canister, from liquid gasoline or dirt.
- Valve electrical circuit: connector, wire or fuse.
How to diagnose the P0497 code step by step
- Command the purge with the scan tool and check that it opens.
- Check the hoses.
- Watch the tank pressure when the purge is commanded. Vacuum should appear.
- With the engine running, command the purge and check that suction appears at the canister hose.
How to fix the P0497 code
- Replace the valve or repair the hoses.
- Replace the canister if it is clogged.
- Clear the codes and verify.
Technical reference data
- Purge works with the engine warm and in closed loop.
- Approximate values only: check the manufacturer data for your engine.
