P0411 Code: Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected

The P0411 code means the computer did not detect the secondary air flow it expects. It is usually a weak pump, a stuck check valve or clogged air passages. The engine runs normally, but the vehicle will not pass an emissions inspection.

What the P0411 code means

The secondary air system pumps air into the exhaust manifold for the first few minutes after a cold start. That oxygen burns the hydrocarbons coming out of the engine, which runs rich when cold, and it warms up the catalytic converter quickly. The computer checks the system by watching how the oxygen sensors react when the pump runs.

The P0411 code says the system works but does not deliver enough air, so the sensors do not go as lean as expected. It is common for the passages in the manifold or the cylinder head to clog with carbon.

Some vehicles have a secondary air pressure sensor that detects the lack of flow directly.

Unlike P0410, which can be an electrical fault, P0411 says the system switches on but the air that arrives is not enough. A secondary air pressure sensor, where there is one, lets you see whether the pump builds pressure. If it does but the oxygen sensor does not react, the passages or the check valve are blocked. If it does not, the pump is the culprit.

P0411 code symptoms

  • Usually no symptoms.
  • Check engine light on.

Likely causes of the P0411 code

  1. Weak air pump. It delivers less flow than needed.
  2. Stuck check valve. Moisture from the exhaust rusts it so it no longer opens or closes.
  3. Passages clogged with carbon. This is very common on engines with high mileage.
  4. Broken hoses. The air escapes before it reaches the manifold.

How to diagnose the P0411 code step by step

  1. Check the pump flow.
  2. Inspect the check valve.
  3. Check the passages in the manifold.
  4. Watch the oxygen sensors when you activate the system.
  5. If the vehicle has a secondary air pressure sensor, compare the pressure with the pump on and off.

How to fix the P0411 code

  • Replace the pump or the valve.
  • Clean the passages.
  • Clear the code and verify the repair.

Technical reference data

  • Approximate pump pressure: just a few kPa (about 1 psi or less).
  • These are approximate values, so check the manufacturer data for your engine.

Frequently asked questions about P0411

Can I drive with a P0411 code?
Yes. The engine runs normally, and the only real consequence is that the vehicle will not pass an emissions inspection until it is fixed.
Is it serious?
Not for the engine, but you will not pass the emissions inspection. It is best to repair it before the inspection is due.
What usually fails?
The air pump or the check valve. Clogged passages in the manifold are the next thing to check.
How much does it cost to fix P0411?
Between $100 and $1,200, depending on whether it needs a cleaning, a valve or a new pump. Diagnosing the P0411 code properly first keeps you from paying for parts you do not need.
What does the P0411 code mean?
It is a generic OBD2 code for incorrect flow in the secondary air injection system. The system is working, but not enough air is reaching the exhaust.
Will a P0411 code clear itself?
Not for good. A weak pump or a blocked passage will bring the code back after the next cold start.
