P0298 Code: Engine Oil Over Temperature
The P0298 code means the engine oil is running too hot. Reduce the load, check the oil level and look over the cooling system. You can drive with caution, but hot oil protects the engine and the turbo poorly.
- Severity
- High
- Can I keep driving?
- Yes, but with caution
- Estimated cost
- $0 to $600
- Difficulty
- Medium
- System
- Air and Fuel
- Applies to
- All OBD2 vehicles

What the P0298 code means
The computer watches the oil temperature. Above its limit (often 130 to 150 °C, or 266 to 302 °F) it stores the P0298 code and may limit engine power. Oil that is too hot loses viscosity and protects the engine and the turbo less well.
Some vehicles calculate the oil temperature instead of measuring it, using the coolant temperature, the engine load and the running time. In that case a P0298 code can come from a real cooling problem or from a coolant sensor that reads too high. Check the type of oil too: oil of the wrong viscosity runs hotter.
P0298 code symptoms
- Loss of power (protection mode).
- Check engine light on.
- Possible temperature warning.
Likely causes of the P0298 code
- Low oil level.
- Heavy load or towing.
- Clogged oil cooler.
- Engine cooling system problem.
- Faulty oil temperature sensor.
How to diagnose the P0298 code step by step
- Check the oil level and condition.
- Inspect the cooling system.
- Compare the sensor reading with the real temperature.
- Inspect the oil cooler.
- Find out whether the vehicle has an oil temperature sensor or calculates the value. The diagnosis changes.
How to fix the P0298 code
- Top up or change the oil.
- Repair the cooling system or the oil cooler.
- Replace the sensor if it reads wrong.
- Use oil of the viscosity and specification the manufacturer calls for.
After the repair, clear the code and watch the oil temperature on the scan tool during a road test to confirm it stays in the normal range.
Technical reference data
- Normal oil temperature: 90 to 120 °C (194 to 248 °F).
- Typical code limit: 130 to 150 °C (266 to 302 °F).
- These values are for orientation only. Check the manufacturer data for your engine.
Brand-specific notes
Common on turbo diesels and high-performance engines that run under sustained load.
