P0215 Code: Engine Shutoff Solenoid Malfunction

The P0215 code means there is a fault in the solenoid that cuts the fuel to shut the engine off, which is common on diesel engines with a mechanical injection pump. A bad solenoid can stop the engine from starting, or keep it from shutting off. You can drive with caution.

What the P0215 code means

On many diesel engines with a rotary injection pump, a solenoid opens the fuel passage with the key on and closes it when you turn the key off to shut the engine down. The computer watches its circuit and stores the P0215 code if it detects a fault.

The shutoff solenoid works the opposite way from what you might think: when it gets power, it opens the fuel passage. So if it loses power (a blown fuse, a bad wire or the immobilizer), the engine will not start even though it cranks fine. And if it gets stuck open on the inside, the engine keeps running after you turn the key off. In that case, stall it by putting it in gear with the brake pressed, and never leave it running.

P0215 code symptoms

  • The engine does not start (solenoid closed).
  • The engine does not shut off when you turn the key off (solenoid open).
  • Check engine light on.

Likely causes of the P0215 code

  1. Shutoff solenoid failed.
  2. Connector or wire problem.
  3. Blown fuse or bad relay.
  4. Immobilizer. On some vehicles it controls this solenoid.

How to diagnose the P0215 code step by step

  1. Listen for the solenoid to click when you turn the key on.
  2. Check for 12 V at its connector.
  3. Measure its resistance.
  4. Check the immobilizer for codes.
  5. Rule out the immobilizer. On many Toyota and Nissan diesels, it cuts power to the solenoid if it does not recognize the key.

How to fix the P0215 code

  • Repair the power supply.
  • Replace the solenoid.
  • If the immobilizer is involved, reprogram the keys.
  • If the engine would not shut off, also check that the pump was not damaged.

Technical reference data

  • 12 V supply with the key on.
  • These values are a rough guide, so check the manufacturer's data for your engine.

Brand-specific notes

The P0215 code is common on diesel engines with a rotary injection pump. The notes below are what is reported for these brands.

P0215 on Toyota

Frequent on Toyota diesels with a rotary pump. On many Toyota diesels, the immobilizer cuts power to the solenoid if it does not recognize the key.

P0215 on Nissan

Frequent on Nissan diesels with a rotary pump. On many Nissan diesels, the immobilizer cuts power to the solenoid if it does not recognize the key.

P0215 on Mitsubishi

Frequent on Mitsubishi diesels with a rotary pump.

Frequently asked questions about P0215

Why won't my diesel engine shut off?
If the shutoff solenoid gets stuck open, fuel keeps reaching the pump. Stall the engine by putting it in gear with the brake pressed, and then repair the solenoid. That is a typical sign of the P0215 code.
Can I drive with a P0215 code?
With caution. If the engine starts and shuts off normally, you can keep driving, but a solenoid that is failing can leave you stuck at any time.
Does the P0215 code have anything to do with the immobilizer?
On some vehicles, yes. The immobilizer can cut power to the solenoid if it does not recognize the key.
How much does it cost to fix P0215?
Roughly $40 to $300, depending on whether it is a fuse, a wire or the solenoid itself.
What is the most common cause of P0215?
A failed shutoff solenoid, or a loss of power to it from a bad wire, connector, fuse or relay. Check for 12 V at the connector first, since that tells you whether the problem is the supply or the solenoid.
Will a P0215 code clear itself?
Not if the solenoid or its wiring is actually bad. The light may go out for a while if the connection is intermittent, but the fault will come back until you repair it.
