P0148 Code: Fuel Delivery Error
The P0148 code means the amount or pressure of fuel delivered does not match what the computer asked for. It shows up mostly on diesel engines and is usually caused by a clogged filter, air in the fuel system or a weak pump. You can drive with caution, but the engine can lose power suddenly.
- Severity
- High
- Can I keep driving?
- Yes, but with caution
- Estimated cost
- $40 to $2,000
- Difficulty
- Medium
- System
- Fuel Injection
- Applies to
- All OBD2 vehicles

What the P0148 code means
On diesel engines (and some gasoline direct injection engines), the computer controls the high-pressure fuel pump and compares the pressure or flow it asked for with what it actually gets. When the difference goes beyond the allowed margin, it stores the P0148 code and often limits engine power.
It is a typical code on Ford Power Stroke, Nissan, Toyota and other diesels. Unlike P0087 (low fuel rail pressure), the P0148 code does not say whether there is too little or too much fuel. A scan tool that compares desired pressure with actual pressure will tell you which. The fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor is the reading to watch.
P0148 code symptoms
- Loss of power and limp mode.
- Long cranking or the engine does not start.
- Jerking under load or on hills.
- Black or white smoke from a diesel.
- Check engine light on.
Likely causes of the P0148 code
- Clogged fuel filter. The most frequent cause. The pre-filter or the water separator can also be clogged.
- Air in the fuel system after a filter change or from a leak in the low-pressure line.
- Weak low-pressure (lift) pump.
- Injectors with excessive return flow that steal fuel delivery.
- Faulty pressure or flow control valve.
- Poor-quality fuel or fuel with water in it.
How to diagnose the P0148 code step by step
- Compare desired pressure with actual pressure at idle, while accelerating and while cranking.
- Check and bleed the fuel filter and the water separator.
- Measure the low-pressure pump pressure at the inlet of the high-pressure pump.
- Run an injector return test by measuring the return flow of each injector over a fixed time.
- Check the control valve: its resistance and the control signal from the computer.
How to fix the P0148 code
- Replace the fuel filter and bleed the air out of the system.
- Repair leaks in the low-pressure line.
- Replace the low-pressure pump or the injectors with excessive return flow.
- Replace the control valve if it does not respond.
- Clear the codes and verify the pressure on a road test. If the P0148 code returns, go back to the pressure readings before you replace anything else.
Technical reference data
- Diesel rail pressure at idle: 250 to 400 bar (about 3,600 to 5,800 psi); at full load, more than 1,600 bar (about 23,200 psi).
- Injector return: all four should be similar. One that returns about double the others points to an internal leak.
- These are reference values only.
Brand-specific notes
The first suspect on diesels is almost always the fuel supply side: filter, water and air. Look at the desired and actual pressure readings before you condemn the pump or the injectors.
P0148 on Ford Power Stroke
On the Ford Power Stroke 6.0 and 6.4, the P0148 code is common because of the low-pressure pump or the injectors.
P0148 on Nissan and Toyota
On Nissan and Toyota diesels, the first suspect is a fuel filter with water in it.
