How your codes relate
- EVAP codes do not affect how the engine runs. Start with the fuel cap (it is free) and leave the smoke test for last.
The order below is the recommended one: first the codes that can cause the others. After each repair, clear the codes and check which ones come back.
Order of inspection
P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction Low
The P0440 code means the computer found that the fuel vapor circuit is not behaving as it should, but it could not pin the fault on a leak of a specific size or on a particular component. It is the most generic code in the EVAP family and almost always comes with a more precise code, which is the one to go after first.
