C0550 Code: Electronic Control Module Malfunction (ABS)

The C0550 code means the ABS module detected an internal fault. Before you replace it, check the supply, the grounds and the software, because an unstable voltage can make a good module look bad.

What the C0550 code means

The ABS module (EBCM) controls the anti-lock brakes and, on most modern vehicles, traction control and stability control too. When it detects a fault, it disables those functions and turns on the ABS and stability warning lights. The normal brakes keep working.

The module runs a self-diagnosis and stores the C0550 code if it detects an internal error. It can be real, but it can also be caused by an unstable supply. On some vehicles (for example, GM with electric steering) the C0550 code refers to the power steering module, so confirm with the scan tool which module stored it.

Important: many C and B codes are not generic. The definition on this page is the most widespread one, used by General Motors and most generic scan tools, but on other makes the same number can mean something else. Always confirm the code text with a scan tool that reads the right module (ABS, body or airbag).

If the module is replaced, it usually needs to be programmed with the VIN and the vehicle configuration. A salvage yard module that has not been programmed can generate new configuration codes.

C0550 code symptoms

  • ABS, stability or steering warning lights on.

Likely causes of the C0550 code

  1. Module supply or ground. An unstable voltage causes apparent internal failures.
  2. Software. An update may be available.
  3. Internal failure. A real fault in the electronics of the module.

How to diagnose the C0550 code step by step

  1. Check the supply and the grounds.
  2. Identify which module stored the code.
  3. Look for updates.

How to fix the C0550 code

  • Correct the supply.
  • Update, or replace and program, the module.

Technical reference data

  • The module requires programming when it is replaced.
  • These values are approximate. Check the manufacturer data for your vehicle.

Brand-specific notes

Never order a module on the strength of this code alone. Rule out the battery, the charging system and the grounds first, and make sure you know which module is actually reporting the fault.

C0550 on GM

On GM vehicles the code appears in both ABS modules and power steering modules.

Frequently asked questions about C0550

What does the C0550 code mean?
It means a control module, usually the ABS module, detected an internal fault. Confirm with the scan tool which module stored it.
Can I drive with a C0550 code?
It depends on the affected system, and you should drive with caution. If it is the ABS, the normal brakes still work, but if it is the power steering module, steering effort may change.
Does the module have to be replaced?
Only after ruling out the supply and the software.
Does it have to be programmed?
Yes. A replacement module usually needs the VIN and the vehicle configuration.
How much does it cost to fix C0550?
Between $0 and $1,500. Correcting a supply or ground problem costs little, and a new programmed module is at the high end.
Will a C0550 code clear itself?
It can if the cause was a temporary voltage problem. A real internal failure will bring it back.
